AFP has appointed Sophie Huet, one of its top journalists, to a new role driving its strategy on Artificial Intelligence, reflecting the Agency’s desire to bolster its competitiveness in this key domain.

Sophie Huet, currently Global Editor-in-Chief, has been appointed to the newly created position of Deputy Global News Director for Editorial Innovation and Artificial Intelligence.

The 44-year-old photojournalist was honoured for his work in Gaza, where, despite danger and fear of being targeted, he has worked tirelessly to document the first months of the war triggered by Hamas's attack on southern Israel on 7 October.

AFP has partnered with the Hungarian Digital Media Observatory (HDMO) to launch a new fact-checking website in a joint effort to fight against disinformation in Hungary.

After a three-year hiatus, the “Marai Photo Award” becomes the “Marai Photo Grant” in 2025. The award is organised by Agence France-Presse in honour of Shah Marai, former photo chief at AFP in Kabul. Shah Marai, who was an inspiration for Afghan photographers throughout his career, was killed in the line of duty at the age of 41 in a suicide attack on April 30, 2018 in Kabul.

Chris Otton, a journalist with a distinguished international career, started this week as the deputy to the editor-in-chief of Agence France-Presse, Sophie Huet.

Chris Otton, a 52-year-old British journalist, first worked in London for the Press Association and later joined the AFP Asia-Pacific desk in Hong Kong in 2001.
